Strutpod

Background

The pods were developed in South Africa in 2015 by a family firm consisting of a father and two sons with combined aerial survey experience exceeding 100 years.

The project was prompted by the high cost of dedicated survey aircraft, their scarcity in a suitable location whenever you wanted one and the realization that much aerial survey work could be done with progressively smaller equipment.

The criteria were that it had to be adaptable to many different photogrammetric loads, durable to be able to withstand difficult operating conditions, capable of being fitted to any of the most commonly found aircraft types in remote locations and not prohibitively expensive.

Design and production was contracted to a prominent aerospace company leading to certification in Canada in 2017 and USA(FAA) in 2018. Our pods have subsequently been flown and formally or informally approved in a host of other countries.

Initially pods were used within the firm and only sold on request but it has now been decided to make them more widely available. That intervening ten years of operating experience is reflected in the systems that are now offered which include many practical features that are often overlooked such as :-

  • Displays should be sunlight readable
  • Touch screens don’t work in turbulence
  • GPS antennas positioning is critical
  • Systems must be dead simple to use
  • Cater for alternative power sources
  • Use a single voltage for all components
